He’s only screaming because he paid full ticket price
I would file this one under the “Don’t waste your money” category if we had one here; instead I’ll just let this opening sentence be your first warning. I won’t print any spoilers in this short recap, but I certainly intend to put this film on blast: LIFE, the newest Jake Gyllenhaal starrer, simply isn’t worth living through. It DID have a kickass trailer, though, so enjoy that one more time and then see the bad news after the jump.
I liked the original John Wick; I actually wrote about it before I even watched it a second time. And here I am again, writing about the latest of what should become a long-running series for Keanu Reeves’ hitman done wrong. After only one viewing, it has my stamp of approval. Yes, he’s a douchebag here, but a helluva hero later
So this was the one for me. Of all the summer movies, Edge of Tomorrow was the one that did it for me. It had all the key elements of a summer blockbuster: science fiction, end of civilization, aliens, monsters, monster aliens, cool technology, time travel and humor. And of course, lots and lots of explosions. EoT was helped tremendously by the fact that it featured the world’s top action star, Tom Cruise, who plays a smarmy guy who really deserves to have something nasty happen to him… and it pretty much does in the first 10 minutes. Then the film takes off like a rocket.
Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun Times called the film “… a badass, sci-fi take on Groundhog Day, with Tom Cruise in the Bill Murray role as a self-centered and not particularly noble loner who finds himself starring in a continual loop in which he is condemned to repeat the same day over and over — which eventually leads to some life-changing revelations.” Yup. Will Smith teams up once again with his son Jaden, and for the first time, with director M. Night Shymalayan, to bring us a pretty cool looking sci-fi flick for the summer of 2013. Looks pretty cool to me; what do you think?
This week, the first trailer for one of DC Comics most iconic characters was released.
Man of Steel, which hopes to re-establish the Superman story on film, does not open until next June. However, the buzz following so much debate about the character’s new direction, as well as the ongoing legal wrangling between Warner Bros. and Jerry Siegel’s family, has been underway for some time.
The last time visionary director Quentin Tarantino teamed up with Lucy Liu, everyone had big, chopsocky fun. This trailer for the upcoming The Man with the Iron Fists looks like big fun, too:
Directed by Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, who is better known as The RZA (a rapper/producer/composer, founder of hip hop group Wu Tang Clan and reportedly distant cousin of Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav), this film also stars Russell Crowe. Not sure when it is coming out, but IMDB lists a 2013 release date for Sweden…!

Presented entirely for your cinematic enjoyment, the following is a masterfully-edited selection of the most fantastic action sequences of recent years, set to the wildly shifting time signatures of modern electronic music. The full title on YouTube is Actionary 720p in Dubstep styles (fix), and it claims to only use footage from official movie trailers. Consider it the uber-trailer for the entire genre of big-budget action films; it is not concerned with context, it is only about celebrating the moments of kinetic movie magic created by hacks and visionaries alike, perfectly matching the on-screen motions to the ebb and flow of the dubstep track (and on a related note, it is also a perfect example of why dubstep is taking over the world).
Sacha Baron Cohen may not be everyone’s favorite satirical comic (I think he’s hilarious), but he has undeniably carved out his own unique space in the pop culture landscape. One of the keys to Cohen’s success is his steady collaboration with Larry Charles, who directed Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and Bruno. This team’s latest project, The Dictator (opening May 11), is supposedly based on a novel written by the late Saddam Hussein. Heh. Sounds like something you might see joked about on an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Hmmm.

Wow. In keeping with my practice of late night movie viewing, I just enjoyed the 130 minute long epic, rock-n-roll, western-themed THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE WEIRD by Korean director Jee-woon Kim. Great characters, unbelievable action, and epic (yes, I used that word again) cinematography. I’ll even go so far as to say it was a cinematic tour de force, a highly energized and stylized mishmash of the old with the new. Check out the kick ass trailer after the jump:
